July should be all about fun, so we're keeping it silly with a them of Our Favorite Party Tricks. Push up contest? Check. Pull up contests? Check. Weird human tricks? Those too, and all the regressions and progressions of each.
Exercise: How to Perform Ring Row Muscle Ups
Purpose: To build strength and endurance in the shoulder blade muscles and adding in core stabilization to prepare you for healthy strong pull-ups (eventually)
Who It's For: For the jet setters, campers, hikers, bikers, beachers, and all-around adventurers!
Why We Love It: Because we know you hate skipping your movements even when on summer break.
Procedure:
Hang rings around chest height. Grip with a false grip if possible. Lean back until your body is straight and heels are on the floor.
Fully extend your arms with your body rigid from shoulders to heels. Engage your core and glutes.
Drive your elbows back and pull the rings toward your lower ribs while keeping them close to your body.
As the rings reach your chest, quickly rotate your wrists over the rings, bringing your shoulders forward and your elbows above your hands.
Push down on the rings to extend your arms into a stable support position.
Reverse the movement under control—bend the arms, transition back below the rings, then extend into the starting row position.
Too hard? A big regression is Scapular Pulls. Start there and build your way up to this progressed version.
